Abstract

Public goods and facilities are collectively funded shared assets, yet awareness of the importance of maintaining them, including among university students, still needs to be continuously fostered. Limited public economic literacy is one factor contributing to a weak understanding of the economic value and social cost of damaged shared facilities. This community service program aimed to improve public economic literacy and foster awareness among university students regarding the care of public goods and facilities through interactive counseling and socialization methods. The activity was conducted on 5 August 2026 at the Department of Economics Education, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Negeri Manado, involving 20 university students. The materials covered the concept of public goods, maintenance and replacement costs of facilities, the externalities of neglecting shared assets, and the relevance of public economic literacy for students as prospective educators and agents of change in society. The results indicated strong enthusiasm and active participation among students during the discussion session, along with indications of strengthened understanding of the importance of maintaining campus and other public facilities as a form of shared responsibility. This activity is expected to serve as a replicable model of public economic literacy education for other study programs or institutions to cultivate a culture of public facility care within higher education settings.
